The War in Iran, Part One: Before it Starts

I’ve been mostly silent about the possibility of us starting yet another war under false pretexts, believing that the debacle in Iraq would temper any plans to try and cause a war with Iran.

However, these past few months the reports of planning for just such a war continue to be heard, and based on history, I’ve got to stop believing that war with Iran is out of the question. It might be insanity, but it’s definitely on the table in the eyes of the political leaders of our country; the military may be quite another matter.

As Digby notes, we live in strange times indeed:

… the only things standing between us and the order to attack Iran are the generals. (Forget congress — they can’t even pass a toothless resolution against the “surge” in less than a couple of months. The “surge” will have already failed by the time they even stage a uselss protest.) And that is about the scariest thing, out of many scary things, I’ve contemplated since the beginning of the Bush administration. We are now in a Strangelovian bizarroworld where we must count on General Buck Turgidson to refuse to follow orders. Holy Moly.

The Buck quote is in reference to the fact that General Pace apparently didn’t get the memo re: Iran. I strongly encourage you to follow the preceding link to learn more about General Pace’s views. Further, I think it’s important for all of us to learn more about what very well might be the next disastrous chapter written by the Worst President Ever; an unwarranted war against Iran would be so bad it might make Iraq look good in comparison (if such a thing is even possible).
