Schumann China, circa 1918-1929

We picked up an interesting set of china at an antique show in Wichita on Saturday. It was made by Schumann company, Bavaria (Germany), and was crafted sometime between 1918 and 1929. It provides service for 8, consisting of a coffee cup with saucer plus a small plate; the collection is perfect for coffee and dessert!

It’s an interesting set and I think that’s why we got it for (what I hope was) a reasonable price. The saucers are all the same design, but there are at least 4 different coffee cup variations. By that I mean the little flower inside the rim of the cup; the bodies are the same. Finally, there are 2 different sets of dessert plates, each featuring a beautiful flower arrangement in the middle, along with some nice flowery trim along the outside.

The seller told us she thought the original owner bought the china in Bavaria sometime after it was made. She thought she had gone to the factory and chosen specific pieces she liked; personally, I’m inclined to think it’s a collection now, but likely wasn’t originally. Anyway, it doesn’t matter about that, as we love the set and won’t just put it on a shelf to look at; we’ll use it on special occasions!

This evening I took some photos and have shared a few below. There are more images as well as larger versions at my Schumann China flickr set.
