Bull Elk in Winter

Bull Elk in Winter || Canon40d/EF100-400F4-5.6L@190 | 1/160s   | f5 |  ISO800 | handheld

We saw this great bull elk over at Maxwell a couple of weeks ago. Though buried a bit in shadow as it was near sundown, he was unafraid as I stopped on the road less than 50 yards from where he was grazing. I didn't want to spook him by getting out of the car and setting up the tripod; thankfully I didn't shake and so the picture turned out OK. January 2008.

Man, what do you think this old dude is thinking?

Hard to say, but I've never seen an elk stay in one place for so long; it really was awesome to be so close to such a majestic creature!
