Top 10 Astronomy Images of 2003

While I’m not a big fan of year-end best of lists, the top 10 astro photos of 2003 web site is worth a visit. I don’t agree with all of their choices, but found many of the images to be stunning.

Two of my favorites are the photo of earth from mars

and the unexplained phenomena that looks like an explosion, but isn’t.

not an explosion

Thanks to Teal Sunglasses for the tip.

  1. Many years ago I was in northern MN out at the end of a logging road. I and three friends had thought it a good idea to ‘camp out’. The only thing that probably saved my life, at least, was it was so still. 30 below, not a breath of wind. But, my comment has to do with what I saw that morning just before sunup. Just enough above the horizon to be seen in its entirety was a comet. It was perfectly shaped as if you took an old style broom, cut off the handle and turned it over, rounded end down, flat end up. It was beautiful. Does anyone know of this comet? I believe it was January of 1971.
p.s. the second picture above “the unexplained phenomena that looks like an explosion, but isn’t.” is technically true, I suppose. It was formed by an ‘explosion’ of sorts, I think. It looks much like the remnants of a nova or supernova ‘explosion’?
